Avoid dry skin condition in cold and dry weather

Updated: May 27, 2020

Dry skin isn't usually serious. In most cases it's caused by factors like hot or cold weather, low moisture in the air, and soaking in hot water. There are a lot of things you can do to improve your skin, including using skin care products like moisturisers , skin oil, balms and avoiding harsh, drying soaps. However in some cases the dry skin condition persists or is particularly severe.

Dry skin is likely to cause one or more of the following symptoms:

  • A feeling of skin tightness

  • Skin that feels and looks rough

  • Slight to severe flaking, scaling or peeling

  • Fine lines or cracks

  • Itchiness

  • Redness

  • Deep cracks that may bleed

Dry skin condition is quite a common skin problem and anyone can get it. However there is a higher risk of developing a dry skin condition if you:

  • Are aged in your 40s or older. The risk increases with age — more than 50 percent of older adults have dry skin.

  • Live in dry, cold or low-humidity climates.

  • Have a job that requires you to immerse your skin in water, such as nursing.

  • Swim frequently in chlorinated pools.

How to avoid or improve dry skin condition?

  • Use moisturiser and skin oil to lock the moisture in the skin

  • Limit water exposure, especial a prolonged hot shower.

  • Avoid using skin drying soaps and harsh cleansers

The unique properties in Elissah Skin Barrier Oil - the natural oat oil, calendula oil and carrot oil

Oat oil - Avena sativa (Oat) Kernel Oil is a natural, multifunctional lipid complex that

contains approximately 10% polar lipids. It has excellent absorbency and protective properties which enhance the skin feel, moisturise and soothe the skin. The ceramides and membrane equivalent phospholipids contained within Oat oil, support the barrier function helping to keep skin in a healthy condition, slowing down skin aging and maintaining the stratum corneum.

What are ceramides?

A ceramide is a molecule made of essential fats and ceramides are naturally found in the upper protective layers of the skin.

What do ceramides do?

They help restore your skin's barrier function, which keeps water in and prevents moisture from escaping out. Ceramides hold skin cells together, forming a protective layer that plumps the skin and retains moisture. Ceramides are used in skincare products to replenish natural lipids lost from exposure to harsh environmental factors, use of drying products and the natural aging process.

Calendula oil has great anti-inflammatory properties, it is helpful with stubborn wounds, acne, rashes, eczema and related conditions. It helps soothe sore, inflamed and itchy skin conditions. Calendula oil is a great moisturiser for dry skin and for severely chapped or split skin. It also helps soothe eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and other skin problems.

Carrot root is a powerful tonic - it contains concentrated levels of naturally occurring Vitamin A. This vitamin is proven to be beneficial to the skin, providing nurturing attributes for cellular repair, in a natural way. Carrot also acts as a cleansing antiseptic which is a vital attribute to consider when balancing sebum production within the skin layers. Its skin disinfecting properties can naturally help support and treat troublesome skin

conditions, such as acne, and even eczema.
